Richard K. Neumann, Jr.
Richard Neumann has been involved with Legal Writing since his first year of teaching in 1975. He has taught at Hofstra Law School since 1978. In addition to Legal Writing, he has also taught Transactional Lawyering (contract drafting and negotiation); Legal Interviewing, Counseling & Negotiation; Civil Procedure; Pretrial Litigation; Federal Courts; Trial Techniques; and clinical courses.
Professor Neumann is the author of Legal Reasoning and Legal Writing: Structure, Strategy, and Style as well as Legal Writing with Sheila Simon and Essential Lawyering Skills with Stefan Krieger. Professor Neumann is also a co-author of the first edition of the ABA Sourcebook on Legal Writing Programs.
Sheila J. Simon
Sheila Simon is a clinical associate professor of law at Southern Illinois University. Ms. Simon joined the faculty at Southern Illinois with a background in both civil and criminal law. She was an Assistant State’s Attorney for four years, with two of those years spent prosecuting domestic batterers. Her civil experience includes five years as a staff attorney at Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance, and three years in private practice. Before joining the Lawyering Skills Program, Ms. Simon developed and supervised the School of Law's Domestic Violence Clinic. She was an adjunct member of the faculty before coming to Southern Illinois University School of Law full time, and has taught family law, argumentation, and legal reasoning and writing. Ms. Simon is the author of Divorce: A Client’s Guide, which helps people understand the processes and terminology involved in divorce cases. Ms. Simon is cross-listed with the SIUC Women’s Studies Program.
Ms. Simon graduated from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1987, and from Wittenberg University in 1983. Ms. Simon has served on a panel to screen federal judge applicants, has been a member of the board of directors of the Women’s Center, and has been a pro bono attorney for the Association for Late Deafened Adults. She also served as a member of the Carbondale City Council from 2003 to 2007.
Ms. Simon and her husband, Perry Knop, have two daughters, Reilly and Brennan. Ms. Simon is a member of Loose Gravel, a local band which issued an eponymous CD in January 2004.
