About the Authors
Michael J. Kaufman
Michael J. Kaufman is a professor and the associate dean for academic affairs at Loyola University of Chicago School of Law. He received his undergraduate degree magna cum laude, with high honors in political science and with distinction in both his majors, political science and English; he was named to Phi Beta Kappa and served as the editorial assistant on The Kenyon Review. At the University of Michigan Law School, he received the American Judicature Society Award and was the senior editor of the University of Michigan Yearbook of International Legal Studies. He clerked for the Honorable Nathaniel R. Jones of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Dean Kaufman practiced securities, antitrust and civil rights litigation in a major Chicago law firm before joining the Loyola faculty. Michael has published more than 50 books and countless articles in the areas of his expertise, including education law and policy. He also has been elected to three terms on the Board of Education of a large school district in the Chicago area, serving as the Board's president and vice president.

Sherelyn R. Kaufman
Sherry Kaufman is Director of Winnetka Public School Nursery, a private non-profit preschool with over 80 years of history in progressive, constructivist early childhood education. She earned her B.A. in English Honors from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she was named to Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated from University of Michigan Law School with a J.D. in 1983. Sherry practiced school law in private law firms, where she counseled school districts in compliance issues and litigation. She also served as Assistant Regional Attorney with the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights . After earning her Master of Arts in Teaching from National-Louis University, she taught at Ravinia Nursery School and Baker Demonstration School. Sherry also earned her Certificate of Advanced Studies in Early Childhood Administration from National-Louis and led WPSN to become one of the first schools in the nation to be accredited under NAEYC's new and more rigorous accreditation process.Education
