About the Book

The new edition of The Study of Law, written by the well-known and respected authors and educators, Katherine A. Currier and Thomas E. Eimerman, continues to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the legal system and an overview of basic legal concepts and substantive law.

This introductory text, which is not specific to paralegal courses, provides students and instructors with:

  • a comprehensive, intelligent overview of all the key concepts covered in a typical introduction to law course
  • a critical thinking approach that introduces students to the study of law and encourages them to interact with the materials through hypotheticals, examples, and well-designed questions
  • a logical and intuitive organization, divided into two parts, that reflects the topics addressed in an introductory course. Part I introduces students to the sources and classification of law, the structure of the court system, and an overview of litigation. Part II covers the basics of analysis and interpretation of the law and includes chapters on substantive law with edited cases that teach students how to read and analyze the law
  • the basic skills necessary to understand statutes and court cases
  • a strong pedagogy that reinforces well-written text presented in an accessible and well-organized format
  • appendices with the U.S. Constitution and NetNotes

This new edition, while retaining all of the features that have made it successful, has been refined to better reflect the coverage and organization of non-paralegal courses:

  • increased focus on the importance of the legal system to everyone’s lives
  • a new chapter on Constitutional Law, including First Amendment issues
  • case excerpts now included in every chapter
  • new cases added throughout
  • Discussion and Critical Thinking exercises edited to focus more on substance and theory and less on procedure

This compact yet comprehensive text provides students with an introduction to the study of law that has the appropriate depth of coverage of the legal system, legal procedure, and legal analysis and balances it with a real-world view of the practice of law.
